The state of today’s industrial environment can be summed up as such: fast-paced. Each warehouse, a giant beehive, buzzing with activity and workers completing task-after-task — it can be difficult to take a step back and really analyze your own facility. The lighting that you use plays a huge role in the efficiency of a warehouse, as insufficient lighting effects the quality of the work that’s taking place inside. A concern that absolutely must be accommodated for with your lighting solution is worker safety. Warehouse lighting should never be the reason why someone was hurt on the job.

Here are some tips on how to keep employees safe on the job with lighting:

  1. Start with the design of your lighting solution.

No matter how efficient or long-lasting your lighting solution may be, be prepared to perform maintenance. Maybe even routine maintenance. When it’s time to service your lamps, don’t let the design of your warehouse lighting make servicing lamps be impossible for anyone who doesn’t work out and practice yoga five times a week. Don’t place lighting equipment over machinery or equipment that would put your maintenance crew in harm’s way. Or, in short, make sure you could service the lamps yourself if you had to.

     2.  Clean your lamps

It’s a good idea to have scheduled cleanings for your lighting equipment. Semi-annual, or even annual, cleanings counter the hinderance that dirt and dust create on lamps.

     3.  Keep track of your lamp’s life-cycle

Knowledge is power, and knowing your lamp’s life cycle will help you save in the long run. When it comes to safety, procrastination — whether it’s out of ignorance or negligence — is a zero-sum game. If you know your lamp’s life cycle, you can schedule lamps to be replaced before they burn out, and you waste valuable time waiting.

Your warehouse should operate like a well-oiled machine, and lighting can be your greatest ally. With the proper solution, lighting can both ensure safety and save you money.
